What Sustainable Timber Sources Are Used in Australian Furniture?
Furniture timber generally comes from one of three routes: plantation-grown resources, reclaimed and salvaged wood, or native regrowth managed under certification schemes.
Reclaimed timber is the one worth knowing about. Our recycled elm range is remilled from timber that has already had a life, and every piece carries the marks of it — nail holes, colour variation, saw marks. No two are alike. Recycled elm is an imported range and can’t be made to order.
On certification. Our mahogany range is made in Indonesia, and that producer holds a Timber Legality Verification System Certificate (SVLK) issued by the Indonesian Government, verifying that the timber is legally harvested and traceable through the supply chain. That certification applies to the Indonesian mahogany range only — our messmate, oak and recycled elm ranges come from other suppliers and are not covered by it.
You’ll also see FSC and PEFC referenced across the furniture industry. They’re worth understanding as a buyer, but always check which specific range a certification actually covers rather than assuming it applies to a whole catalogue.
What Eco-Friendly Finishes Are Available?
We offer a non-toxic build option on selected ranges, using finishes formulated without the solvents found in conventional lacquers. It’s a separate, more expensive specification rather than our standard finish. If low-VOC matters to you, ask us which pieces are available in that build.

What Is the Custom Furniture Process?
Our custom-made furniture is built at our Riverwood factory and workshop in Sydney. The process runs like this:
- Tell us what you need — dimensions, timber, finish and any features such as soft-close drawers or a particular leg style.
- We quote it in writing — price and timeline, before you commit to anything.
- We build it — estimated production time is three to four weeks, plus delivery.
- We deliver it — into the room you want it in.
Custom-made pieces are built specifically for you, so they can’t be returned for change of mind. We confirm every detail in writing before building starts.
Which Customisation Options Are Available?
- Timber – Victorian ash, American oak, New Zealand pine, blackwood, blackbutt or American walnut.
- Dimensions – adjust height, depth and width to fit your room.
- Finish – including white painted MDF for our French Provincial and Hamptons pieces, often with a solid Victorian ash top.
- Hardware – handles, soft-close runners and storage configurations.
We’ll post free timber samples anywhere in Australia. Colour is difficult to judge on a screen, and it’s the thing people most often get wrong. Just ask.

How to Identify Genuinely Australian Made Furniture
Look for clear origin statements rather than vague wording. “Australian made” gets used for furniture designed here and built overseas, or imported flat and assembled in a warehouse. Ask where a piece is actually built, and ask which parts of a range the claim covers.
We clearly distinguish our Australian custom-made range, built at Riverwood, from our imported furniture. Most of our catalogue is imported, and we say so.
How Do You Care for Timber Furniture?
Proper care preserves both appearance and structure, and it’s the main reason a solid timber piece outlasts a flat-pack one.
- Dust weekly with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface grit.
- Wipe spills promptly and use coasters for hot or wet items.
- Keep out of direct sunlight where you can, and away from heat sources.
Solid timber can generally be sanded back, re-oiled and repaired. A scratch is often a surface issue rather than a write-off, which is the whole environmental argument for buying it once instead of three times.
